About Us
Why are we doing this?
The idea for L.A. Tapestries was forged when I applied for a spot in a popular recital series here in Los Angeles. I put together a proposal for a concert that incorporated music from a sampling of Los Angeles’ cultures. I made an impassioned case for a concert that directly and viscerally spoke to the many rich cultures and musical traditions that inhabit L.A.
The response during my audition: do you have any Schubert?
This was a huge disappointment, and I began to wonder about opportunities lost by an insular classical music community, which of course has a serious duty to preserve an amazing art form, but also a responsibility to communicate with the people it is supposed to serve.
Having grown up and studied music here in Los Angeles, I’ve come to know quite a few excellent, talented musicians. I decided that we could together forge a new path for classical music: one in which we go out into our community – not to perform works that are ‘important’ and should be heard – but works that speak to our communities and help us form a common bond through which all music can be explored and enjoyed (even Schubert).
I have assembled a group of musicians with diverse backgrounds and passions. Each brings a beautiful voice, a unique perspective, and the spark of excited curiosity to the music they perform. For some, their songs are the songs of their heritage. For others, they are new discoveries. But for all of us, this concert series is a labor of love, and we hope that that love will come across in our performances.
Please join us at one of our concerts to experience our singular vision and goal.
Sincerely,
Nova Safo
